September 1Hi all,
Today,
Sat Sept 1st, I visited John for my 4th time. He looked as
handsome as ever. It just feels so good to be close to him and to
have 4 hours to share the happenings of the past 2 weeks. Even
then the time goes very quickly.
Here is part of the recent letter he sent me, regarding his work assignment.
"Believe
it or not, I'm really busy now. I started in maintenance
yesterday and also started a class-Philosophy-last night. I just
had time to run and shower yesterday before the 4pm count. Got
supper, mail call and on to class at 6pm. Then we had Bible study
at 7pm. Came back about 8:30, read my mail, read a book &
went to sleep. Tonight, we start our Spanish class. It's
funny to say, but I might have picked up TOO MUCH to do but I'm going
to wait & see.
"The
first day on the job could have been a drag but it turned out OK.
I reported at 6:45am. There was nothing for our crew to do--sat
around till 10:45 & left for chow. I had a couple of good,
long conversations & met a few new guys. I also noticed a
couple of cupolas on top of the one-story maintenance shop. After
lunch, I asked Mr Kelly, my supervisor, if I could paint them since
they needed it pretty badly. He said OK so I bought myself a
project. I spent three hours in the afternoon and scraped
them. I'll caulk and prime today if the weather clears (heavy
overnight fog). He also told me they had a pretty big concrete
job coming up which he said he'd put me on. My first impression
is that guys keep their eyes & ears open for things that need to be
done. I'm pretty good at that so I might be able to help line up
some work as I move along."
That sounds like John, doesn't it.
I also received a 36 page journal for his first month in prison. I typed it out and it is a full 16 page document.
