Update from Paula
7/24/2001
Hi,
John has called me 3 times so far. He sounds really good.
He says that the prison camp is very laid-back. The prisoners
seem to be out and around as please, except for their time on the
job. John is almost approved for the maintenance crew. That
should make him happy, unless it is cleaning toilets or something like
that.
The
prison is air-conditioned, and kept quite cool, like a
supermarket. Blankets are needed at night. John is in a
room with one other person, who will be getting out in Oct. They
can make roommate requests, so John is going to check with Bill Houston
about moving in with him.
The
mess hall meals are at 6am, 11am & 4pm. Lots of vegetables
and salad and they can take extra food like fruit & bread back to
their rooms. John has been running (after purchasing a pair or
jogging shoes) and hopes to lose some weight in the next 6
months. He said that many of the other inmates have lost weight
while they have been in prison.
Telephone
calls are limited to 15min at a time, cost 15cents per minute out of
his commissary money and a total of 300 minutes are allowed per
month. Sounds pretty good. His visitor list can have 10 on
it besides the immediate family. If anyone would like to be on
the list, he needs their name, complete address, date of birth and
social security number. Then a form is sent to that person and
completed and returned to the prison for investigation. The guard
told us to be very honest regarding any previous convictions, because
they do make a thorough check. So any of you with the ban/bar
order, please make note. Don't know if a traffic ticket falls
into that category.
Mailings
can include soft cover material, paper back books, magazines and
newspaper clippings from any source. Hardcover material has to
come from a publisher, store or book club.
I
will be visiting John this Saturday, July 28th. I am really
looking forward to having enough time to ask him all the questions and
tell him all the news that I think of after we hang up from a phone
call. Thanks to all of you for your support, prayers and actions.
